Alternatives to Time-Outs

Time-outs aren't that effective with children under 2. Try these tactics to teach your baby about boundaries and limits.

Give him a warning look.

Change your tone of voice. Speak sternly.

Move him to an alternate setting -- a separate room, a playpen.

Hold him on your lap, or hold his hands if he's hitting.

Redirect him. When he throws his cup, offer a soft ball to toss instead.

Save "no" for when it's serious.
